COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The Sixers (Smith) rolled on Championship Sunday with two blowout victories, securing the 13u D2 Platinum Championship at the Council Bluffs Recreation Complex.

The Sixers (6-1), which plated seven runs in the first inning, earned an 11-0 victory over GBN Feeder Green in the title game Sunday afternoon after handling The Yard 8-0 earlier that day.

“It was great,” Sixers coach Joe Smith said of the title win. “We came out here to have a lot of fun and that’s what we did. It was a great tournament and we had a blast.”

The Sixers’ lone official blemish was against the Colorado Prospects, a 10-3 result on Thursday. The Prospects went on to take runner-up honors in the D1 Platinum bracket.

“We had higher goals to be in the top bracket, but we played great teams and competition and the Prospects knocked us down a bit,” Smith said.

Gavin Cruz cruised and allowed just two hits across five innings of work. He struck out eight batters and walked three.

“Gavin did very well today,” Smith said. “He catches, too, but he loves to pitch, commands the zone well on the mound, and was able to have a two-pitch mix in any count. He pounded the zone and got groundballs.”

6-4-3 DP Cougars 13u go undefeated
The boys from Marietta, Georgia, continued raking on their way to an Omaha Slumpbuster D1 Platinum Championship. The 6-4-3 DP Cougars topped the relentless Colorado Prospects (Gorman), 9-6, to claim the title at Council Bluffs Recreation Complex.

6-4-3 beat the Mid Atlantic Red Sox 11-0 in the semifinals. The Cougars tallied seven runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead. But the Colorado Prospects tacked on single tallies in the second and third before a four-spot in the fifth to bring the deficit 8-6 after five innings. But the Cougars shut the door with another run in the sixth and held the Prospects scoreless in the final two innings to earn the hardware.

6-4-3 went a perfect 9-0 — including the warmup games — on the week in Omaha.

Long Beach 6th Tool takes home 13u D2 Gold
They avoided revenge and took home a title in the process. Long Beach 6th Tool earned a 16-1 victory over PV Thunder (Cannaday) to claim the Omaha Slumpbuster 13u D2 Gold Championship.

Long Beach 6th Tool’s Cash Girard tossed a four-inning no-hitter, striking out six batters and surrendering three walks. One unearned run was scored on his dime. At the plate, Cash also recorded a crucial three-run home run in the second.

Prime Nationals (7-0), out of Papillion, Nebraska, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but the QC Rattlers trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the second. The Nationals put the pedal to the metal with a nine-run second inning to put the game out of reach.
